Description

NGC 2736 is a small part of the Vela Supernova Remnant, located near the Vela Pulsar in the southern constellation Vela. Discovered by John Herschel in 1835 at the Cape of Good Hope in 1835, its linear appearance triggered its popular name. The Pencil is about 815 light-years from our solar system, and is thought to have been formed from part of the shock wave of the larger Vela Supernova Remnant. This data was acquired by Lloyd Smith and the good folks at Deep Sky West.
